What is a TPE car mat? Safety, smell and heat in the UAE
Updated · 4 min read
Short answer: TPE stands for thermoplastic elastomer. It is a material that behaves like rubber, soft and grippy, but is moulded like plastic. TPE car mats are waterproof, light and rinse clean, and they are generally considered safe, with little or no smell when new. In the UAE they suit cars that see sand, mud and wet shoes.
What TPE is
TPE is a family of materials that sit between rubber and plastic. It bends and springs back like rubber. Because it melts when heated, it can be moulded into precise shapes, which is why it is used for car mats that follow the shape of the floor.
For a car mat that means:
- It does not soak up water, sand or spilled drinks.
- It stays flexible, so it does not go stiff and stay folded.
- It is lighter than a typical solid rubber mat.
- It is generally odour-free when new, unlike some rubber.
- It can be recycled.
Are TPE mats safe?
TPE is widely used in products that touch skin and food, such as phone cases, kitchen items and toys. A TPE car mat is generally considered a safe choice. It does not usually contain natural rubber latex, so latex is not a concern for most people.
The bigger safety question for any mat is fit. The driver mat must stay in place and never slide under the pedals. Our TPE mats for the Jetour T2 have an anti-slip back and are cut to the T2 floor.
Do TPE mats smell in the heat?
Good TPE has little or no smell, even new. Plain rubber mats are the ones known to give off a strong smell when a car sits in the summer sun. If a "TPE" mat smells strongly, it may be a blend or a lower-grade material.
Like any mat, TPE gets warm in a car parked in the sun. It does not soak up heat smells or sweat the way carpet can.
Are TPE mats slippery?
The top surface is textured to give grip under shoes. TPE can feel slippery if you spray it with tyre shine, silicone or dashboard dressing, so never use those on mats. Plain water and mild soap keep the grip as it should be.
TPE vs carpet vs rubber
| TPE | Carpet | Rubber | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water and spills | Sit on top, rinse off | Soak in | Sit on top, rinse off |
| Sand | Shake or rinse out | Works into the fibres | Shake or rinse out |
| Smell in heat | Little or none | None from the mat, can hold odours | Can smell |
| Feel underfoot | Firm, grippy | Soft, quiet | Firm, heavy |
| Look | Practical, sporty | Factory-like, plush | Practical |

The downsides of TPE
TPE is firmer and a little noisier underfoot than carpet. It looks practical rather than plush. On a flat TPE mat, water sits on top until you tip it out. If you want spills held inside the mat, choose a version with raised edges.
